| | St. John's School is currently a Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students Grades 6 - 10. *St. John's anticipates being authorized in spring 2012. The overall philosophy of the MYP is expressed through three fundamental concepts that support and strengthen all areas of the curriculum. These concepts are based on:
• intercultural awareness
• holistic learning
• communication (www.ibo.org) |

 | MYP AREAS OF INTERACTION
Subject area content is presented through the context of the Areas of Interaction, which help to demonstrate how these subjects are inter-connected and are linked to real-world issues. Through the four Areas of Interaction in the MYP Octagon above and the fifth AoI, “Approaches to Learning”, students learn how they learn best and become critical and reflective thinkers. |
THE PERSONAL PROJECT
In the final year of the programme, each student completes a personal project, a significant piece of work that is the product of the student's own initiative and creativity. Each project must reflect a personal understanding of the areas of interaction. Students apply the skills acquired through one of these areas as well as approaches to learning. Students are expected to choose their project, which can take many forms, and take the process through to completion under the supervision of a teacher in the school. This involves:
• planning
• research
• a high degree of personal reflection.
The personal project is assessed by teachers against a set of IB assessment criteria. (www.ibo.org) St. John’s School students in Grade 10 this year, 2011-2012, are the second cohort of students to complete the Personal Project at SJS. | | All eight subjects are considered to be equally important. The MYP encourages students to have a positive approach toward learning and make connections between academic curriculum and their everyday lives, by viewing the eight subject areas through several different lenses.
