| | Grades 11 - 12, Diploma Programme St. John’s School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) in Grade 11 and 12. This two year programme is an academic pre-university programme. It is a deliberate balance between breadth and specialisation in subjects.
The DP educates the whole person (intellectual, personal, emotional and social) and develops inquiry, critical thinking and the self reflection skills. International-mindedness - an understanding of global issues and a concern for others in our community and the broader world - is encouraged and students develop the skills to live and work in an international context. The programme provides excellent preparation for both university and adult life and encourages students to take charge of their own education.
The curriculum is made up of six groups of subjects; students select a subject from each group. The groups are divided into:
First Language (Language A) Secondary Language (Language B)
Individuals and Society (Humanities) Experimental Sciences
Mathematics Arts and Electives The Diploma Programme has three core components:
The Theory of Knowledge course is an interdisciplinary course focusing on critical thinking and knowledge issues. It examines the origins and validity of various forms of knowledge and seeks to help students become more independent and discerning thinkers.
The Extended Essay is a 4,000 word essay students complete in a subject of their choice. This teaches independent research and academic writing skills which will be needed at university level. It also offers the students an opportunity to study a topic or question at greater depth. Students complete 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) activities. These are divided into creative and artistic activities; sport, expeditions and physical activities; and service to various groups within the school and wider communities. CAS activities are designed to offer opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop confidence, self awareness and cooperative skills and promote an active concern for other people. | Graduation and University Acceptance All IB Diploma courses are recognized by the BC Ministry of Education. Thus all Diploma and Certificate students are eligible for the Dogwood Diploma.
Universities prefer IB students because the DP curriculum develops a balanced variety of knowledge and skills. Universities actively recruit IB graduates and give some credit for first year courses for Higher Level courses and TOK. IB graduates are much better prepared for and successful in university due to the range of subjects they have studied, the Theory of Knowledge course and their Extended Essay experience. Employers too, are increasingly looking for flexibility and adaptability, something all IB students are able to offer.
