| | Duke of Edinburgh's Awards A further example of how St. John’s students grow to lead well-rounded lives can be seen in how many attain the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Senior students participate in activities to earn the bronze, silver or gold level. Students are required to try new things and invest their time in performing community service, developing skills, becoming involved in athletics and taking an adventurous journey. Students receive their silver award from the Lieutenant Governor General of BC at Government House in Victoria, while students who earn the gold award receive it from a member of the Royal Family in Vancouver. |
Students participate in intramural and community service activities in which all of the school's students are divided into three teams or Houses: Thunder, Lightning and Storm. Each House has a Captain who is responsible for planning activities and encouraging team spirit. Within the three Houses, students compete against each other to earn house points. The House teams compete in a variety of activities throughout the year, including food drives, fundraising activities, games, and team sports. At the end of the school year, the winning team is awarded the House Cup. |
As leaders of the Junior School, all grade 5 students are invited to participate in the Grade 5 Leadership Club. The first goal of this group is to plan and host the annual Halloween Parade. The Club will also be brainstorming ideas around educating the younger grades on IB and the IB Profile, being excellent role models, planning and presenting at assemblies, promoting school spirit, and being actively involved in fun events in and around the school. |

The Senior School Student Council is elected annually by peers and teachers. Senior School-elected students are called Prefects, each with their own specific responsibilities, from Arts to Athletics to Service. Grades 6-12 students also nominate class representatives to the Student Council to assist with work and communicate with homeroom classes. The Student Council plans school-wide events such as the Christmas Assembly and Spirit Week. They also have the responsibility of being school ambassadors, representing St. John’s at school and community events and building school spirit. |
