Community Service & CAS
Service is one of the four pillars that form the foundation of St. John's. Senior students complete community service hours to help them understand the important responsibility all citizens share in the community. Students are expected to accumulate the following number of hours during the school year:
Grade 6 - 6 hours
Grade 7 - 9 hours
Grade 8 - 12 hours
Grade 9 - 15 hours
Grade 10 - 21 hours
Grades 11 and 12 - 150 hours over two years as part of their CAS responsibilities in the Diploma Programme
St. John’s is affiliated with the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI). Students may choose to spend their volunteer hours with a grassroots charitable organization and present the mission and worthiness of the charity to their class. To give our students further opportunity to make a difference, the YPI donates $5,000 annually to the cause of each participating school’s winning presentation.
Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) is a component of the
Diploma Programme
that challenges and motivates students to become well-rounded individuals. CAS requires students to get out of the classroom and have balance in their lives. CAS hours are accumulated through various initiatives including volunteering, co-curricular activities, such as the
Duke of Edinburgh Awards
, and participation on teams in the Grade 11 and 12 years.
