While SJS was getting ready for Halloween, the Debate and Public Speaking team — Jerry C., Jasmine L. and I — were headed towards Boston for the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC).
In the competition, we met hundreds of people from all over the world, including China, India, South Africa and more. We all had the same goal of persuading an audience through speech. In this environment of excellence and competition, we pushed ourselves to our limits to show our skills to the judges.
The competition consisted of three chosen categories; I chose Persuasive Speaking, Parliamentary Debate and Interpretive Reading. There were two rounds of each and we were assessed by three judges.
When we were not competing, the IISPSC team took us around Boston to visit Harvard, the Museum of Fine Arts, and even to watch a hockey game! We ate amazing food and connected with the culture of the city.
My greatest take-away from this experience was knowing how it feels to dedicate five whole days to one of my passions — including how tiring and rewarding it all was!
