As St. John’s is an IB continuum school, service is prevalent throughout the whole school’s programme and is one of our core values. Service is lived by our students every day; whether they are volunteering within our school to provide support for our younger students, or working on the construction of a home within an international community. Our students recognize the importance of giving their time, energy and resources to support those in need and we are very proud of our longstanding partnerships with local and global community organizations whom we fundraise for or volunteer with annually.
We have fundraised for local organizations like Terry Fox Foundation for 20+ years, raising over $20,000 each year for cancer research.
Throughout the year, there are also numerous student-led initiatives to raise funds for organizations such as BC Children's Hospital, The Greater Vancouver Food Bank, Covenant House and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It is inspiring to see our students demonstrating this level of service and care for others within our community.
We also have a partnership with the Toskan Casale Foundation, which oversees the Youth Philanthropy Initiative. YPI is a year-long collaborative service project where youth work together in small groups to research a community organization in need of support. Each group presents their case to a panel of student, alumni and staff judges and the winning group is awarded a grant of $5,000 to present to their selected charity. This project is a grade favourite every year.
Service at St. John’s School is supported, recognized and celebrated throughout the PYP, MYP & DP programmes and the Service as Action continuum is summarized in the diagram below:
