SJS to Host Senior Girls and Boys Basketball Zone Championships

The week of February 18 - 22 is going to be very busy for those involved with our Senior Girls and Senior Boys Basketball Programmes with our Senior Girls and Senior Boys Basketball Programmes as both teams are set to host Basketball Zone Championships right here in the Gunn Gymnasium.

Our Senior Girls are set to host Round 1 of the Vancouver Sea to Sky Single A Senior Girls Basketball Championships right here in the Gunn Gym on Tuesday, February 18 beginning with King David High School at 4:00 pm. Zones are a one and done deal, meaning win and you live to play another day, lose and you are out of the tournament.

King David squeaked by the SJS Senior Girls Team with a two point victory back in December. The girls are starting to gel as a team under Coach Sanderson and are confident in getting a better result this time around.

On Thursday, February 20, we will celebrate “Senior Day” as our Senior Girls play round one of their GVISAA playoffs. This will be the last game our Grade 12 athletes will play at SJS. We would like to honour them during Thursday’s game. Please stop by the Gunn Gym and give the girls a cheer or two as they wrap up their high school basketball careers! Game time is TBD.

Our very own Senior Boys Team is set to host the entire Vancouver Sea to Sky Senior Boys Zone Championships starting on Thursday, February 20. The Eagles have secured the Number 1 seed for this tournament and will begin play on Friday, February 21 at 4:00 pm in the second semi-final of the tournament.

This will also be the last weekend our Grade 12 boys will play here at St. John’s. We will celebrate our Grade 12 boys for their “Senior Day” during Friday’s semi-final tipping off at 4:00 pm.

The Tournament final is set for Saturday, February 22 at 7:30 pm. The Number 2 seed, King David High School are strong favourites to get to the final again this year. They have been Zone Champions for the past three years running.

It looks like a two horse race between St. John’s and King David. Both teams are expected to make the final in what could be an absolute thriller of a basketball game. The winner will earn a coveted berth to the Provincial Championships to be held in Langley from March 4 - 7.

The Tournament Final on Saturday, February 22 will have an admission charge of $2.00 per student and $5.00 per adult at the door. All proceeds will go directly to the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Committee to help cover the costs of trophies, all-star awards, signage and referee costs.

We hope to see SJS fan support for both our Senior Girls and Senior Boys during Zones and playoffs! There isn’t much better entertainment than high school sports played at a competitive level.
